      <image:title>#WhyLessWaste - Red Mud</image:title>
<image:caption>When producing aluminum, 2 to 2.5 tons of solid waste are produced for every 1 ton of aluminum produced. The most significant waste of aluminum production is red mud (bauxite residue) and mercury emissions. Red mud cannot be recycled, stays forever, it is usually landfilled in large pools near the aluminum plants. Red mud contains uranium, thorium, radium and sometimes elevated arsenic and chromium</image:caption>

<image:caption>These are the 672 beer cans and bottles + 2 beer packagings we picked this month for #oktobertrashfest (2 persons, and 2 days we were 3) mostly from nature. They are only part of the 8.5 % of waste generated by households in the European Union. Mining and quarrying, manufacturing and construction sum up to the 72% of waste generated in the EU (source Eurostat, year 2016. Eurostat provides official statistical information in the EU). This means that even more waste was produced in the production of this other trash you see here and around you. The other big trash, that 72% , we normally don’t see it but it is there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have picked all these plastic bottles in November 2019 mainly from nature in the suburbs of Madrid. There are 485 billion units of of PET plastic bottles produced in the world each year and over 90% do not get recycled. And those are only PET plastic... because there are many other types of plastic bottles around, such as HDPE, PP, etc.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The weather in Europe and eastern North America benefits from circulating seawater current, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current, which transports tropical heat and makes the weather milder. Climate change is weakening these massive currents in the ocean, according to two studies published in the prestigious journal Nature. One of those studies connects greenhouse gas emissions with the weakening of these seawater currents in the Atlantic. (Study led by Levke Caesar, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, 2018).</image:caption>

      <image:title>#WhyLessWaste - White Flag - Cease Fire</image:title>
<image:caption>70 million tons of municipal solid waste were incinerated in the European Union in 2017 and 40 million tones of fossil CO2 was released into the atmosphere. North America burns 11.2 % of its waste with energy recovery and Asia Pacific area 29.2%. If combustion plants are properly operated, fly ash is produced after burning. Fly ash is hazardous waste with heavy metals. Fly ash is stabilized using cement and then landfilled. Fly ash requires a large amount of cement to be stabilized, with all its associated CO2 emissions. Construction and maintenance of sanitary landfills for fly ash are very costly and they have the risk of polluting underground water due to leaching. If incineration plants are not properly protected, they can also emit toxic pollutants such as dioxins, furans, acid gases and heavy metals. Dioxins and furans are highly toxic substances, and accumulate on soil. Dioxins can be absorbed by the fat tissue and be stored in the body, and can cause adverse effects on people and animals’ health.</image:caption>

      <image:title>#WhyLessWaste - Remember Guinea</image:title>
<image:caption>We can not afford to toss aluminum cans and aluminum foil in nature and landfills. Aluminum production impairs air quality. Many plants producing aluminum all over the world emit sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) to the atmosphere. Potent greenhouse perfluorocarbon (PFC) gases are formed. A significant amount of dust, smoke and metal compounds are also released into the air, mainly from the feed material and fuel used in the process. At the quarries to obtain bauxite in Guinea, the world’s main source of aluminum, the amount of red dust released is so high that even the saliva of the local people has changed color. Agricultural lands are covered by red dust and the quality of water is also affected. Jamaica also has one of the largest deposits of bauxite in the world.</image:caption>

      <image:title>#WhyLessWaste - Glamour of Glass</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s bring glamour to glass trash. Rumors about the heavy weight of glass and its high consumption of fuel have been tainting glass reputation. However: Even though glass is a heavy material, it is not transported across long distances because it is made from (among others) silica, one of the most abundant elements on Earth crust. Therefore, glass is produced, collected and recycled locally, with less fuel consumption associated to transport as compared to other materials which originate in remote places. The most common glass is made of silica, soda ash and lime. As in the production of any industrial product, there are waste emissions from production of glass: CO2, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, release of particles into the atmosphere and water pollution. However, glass containers for food and beverages are 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly. Recycled glass requires melting at a lower temperature than from raw materials, and pollutes air 20% less and water 50% less.</image:caption>
